So I recently spoke to my parents and after exchanging a few immature jokes with my father, we began talking about careers.

Since I'm almost out of University, both of them are worried about my future. Since my mother is a teacher, and my father thinks that it would be good for his kids to move out of the country (he's not the proudest Canadian), they both started telling me to learn mandarin, Korean, or Japanese and to go teach English in either china, Korea or Japan.

I won't lie and say that I think that their suggestions are totally crazy, but I'm also not 100% sold on their suggestion either. I was already planning on becoming an English/Philosophy teacher, but teaching abroad seems kind of extreme for me. Thing is, English teachers aren't exactly rare in Canada.

So what do you guys think I should do? Should I take their advice or just figure things out myself?

Going out to another country is usually a good experience, and teaching there can teach you a lot about the culture and other useful worldly things, but it's entirely your choice on what you want to do. If it doesn't interest you, then don't waste your time.

Thing is, it does interest me, but at the same time it's kind of scary (I don't travel much). And the only teaching experience I have is as a swimming instructor, so I don't really know how well that would translate to teaching people how to speak.

Dating wouldn't be the main reason for doing that. And that last bit you wrote was kind of creepy... Unless you were talking about girls that are over 20 years old.

Ok this is going WWWAAAYYY off topic here.

I'm thinking it over. I guess I'll try taking a few Japanese language courses over the next couple of years and see how that goes. I already kinda have a sense of the meanings of certain sentences and words, so I think I could learn it (I still think I'll turn out to be a poor speaker though).

I might end up staying in University longer than I originally thought I would though, so I'll stay poor longer than I would have otherwise... oh well.
